Quantum PV has been established to develop a new, Ultra High Efficiency (UHE) solar cell. These cells convert the sun's energy into electricity. Quantum's cells, also known as photovoltaics (PV for short), have the potential to produce electricity at more than double the level of efficiency found in today's solar cells.
The UHE solar cells will be developed using a material called Porous Silicon. While over 90% of today's solar PV cells are silicon-based, no one has successfully harnessed the potential of Porous Silicon to create a commercially viable solar cell.
"For a technology that has been around for 50 years, there haven't been any radical improvements in cell efficiency to-date" said Kent Ridgeway, CEO of Quantum PV. "We are simply taking concepts from the semiconductor world and applying them to a product that has not changed significantly in the past few decades." Mr. Ridgeway's background is in semiconductor R&D and manufacturing.
